A long, long time ago, I met two Esperanzas.
When they arrived in my life, they’ve already crossed entire continents of joy and sorrow, carrying in their hands and in their hearts the invisible maps that only time can draw.
The first Esperanza had once lived beneath foreign suns, in lands where the desert stretches so far and wide. She also lived in places where the jungles hid men who carried storms in their pockets. And to all of these places, she brought peace.
She knew what it meant to gather the broken pieces of a dream and carry those pieces home with dignity. Life had asked much of her and yet she remained generous.
Decades ago, when my hands had only begun learning to put together gemstones and cheap glass and bezels, she became the first person to trust what I could create. She extended faith as naturally as one offers water to a traveller.
The second Esperanza also has a rare gift. She knew how to speak to frightened hearts. She offered courage and always understood that reassurance comes from small certainties, gently placed before a person until they remember their own strength.
During those days, sorrow occupied a chair in the corner of the room, as it has done in every house since the beginning of time. I did not fear it, nor did I surrender to it. Like so many women and men before me, I learned to live with it. Yet it was then that the Esperanzas appeared, bearing a lantern against the darkness.
They placed it in my hands so gently that it made me cry for them more than I did for myself because hearts like theirs can’t be found that easily. This is why this necklace bears their name.
Its turquoise stones are the colour of courage carried across great distances. Its pearls are reminders that beauty is sometimes born from endurance.
The peridots speak of renewal, of gardens that bloom again after difficult seasons. The pinks carry affection and tenderness. Silver threads weave through them all.
At its centre hangs a shell, for every life leaves traces upon another.
The sea shapes the shell, the years shape the soul, and the people we love shape the kind of hope we would hold in our hands.
And a long, long time ago, the stars aligned to give me the gift of two Esperanzas.
